I love the satirical newspaper The Onion. It is thought provoking yet hysterical all that the same time. What I love about The Onion is not that it makes me laugh, even though it does, or that it’s free. I love that with a slight shift in perspective the entire story opens up to a new path. It’s as if they look a the same painting we all passed by in the hallway and decided to flip it over and look at it from the side that collects dust facing the wall.
Sometimes a simple shift in perspective can open up whole new avenues of thinking. Just think if you and a friend were problem solving about a sculpture of a woman. You were trying to come up with new ideas by looking at the sculpture from the front side and your friend was trying to come up with new ideas by looking at the sculpture from the back side. Those two different starting points or shifts in perspectives would take you to totally different places.
The next time you are faced with a challenge, an obstacle or a goal look at it from a different angle. Focus on different aspects, search for different elements and starting points. It might feel uncomfortable at first. You may even feel a bit lost (LOSE – building block). Ultimately however you will have challenged yourself to come up with and build on a new perspective.
So go ahead and twist it, turn it, flip it, break it apart, hug it, squeeze it, build on it, take away from it……
Oh ya, if you haven’t read The Onion this week it’s hysterical.
